A long long time ago, we may or may not have written how SUVs weren’t our thing. But, there’s no hiding from the fact that they are awesome for families. The space, the height, the ease of driving. There’s so many pros that outweigh the cons. We’re converts,  and we are more than happy to admit that.

So what’s next for us to explore? What is out there that we think might work for a family? Please welcome to the stage the Holden Trax.

Holden Trax

Now the Trax is the baby of the SUV range for Holden, it’s a compact little thing, but it still feels like it has all the SUV benefits when you step inside it.

I am over six feet tall, so space is always the first thing we look at when it comes to the driver’s seat and whilst the Holden had space, I couldn’t get the seat low enough for it to be comfortable for me. I slouched a little in order to get a comfortable view. My wife, who’s a foot shorter, had no such issues, and found the driver’s seat very comfortable and the extra height you gain from being in the Trax really valuable for seeing ahead on the roads, particularly in heavier traffic.

Whilst we’re on the interior, it’s a nicely put together car. The leather look seats are comfortable and the stitching around the dashboard are nice touches to add a classier feel to what is ultimately, a run-around car for a family.

There’s so much storage for a smallish car too. The cup holders are big, there’s plenty of little storage compartments on the doors and there’s even a really handy little tray which is under the passenger seat – it’s very easy to forget about that one though, trust me, I know. I left a book in there for 3 days!

There’s a reasonable amount of room in the back for the kids in the car seats, and as a real bonus there’s also side impact air bags in both the front and back seats. That is an excellent addition for a car in this price range for any family.

Everything is very angular on this car, whether it’s the gear stick with the funny little up and down shift switch.

Or the rear brake lights which have a chunky feel on the back of the car. It’s made to look solid and chunky and to be fair, that’s exactly how it comes across.

The front of the car is sleeker than older Trax models with a mean looking grill.

As for the engine size – this is a great car for zipping around the city, doing the school run or grabbing the groceries from the supermarket. It’s a 1.4 litre six speed automatic across most of the range and there’s not much to it if you need a bit of power on the freeway.

Boot space is as much as you would expect from a car of this size. We did our regular fruit and veg market run for our food co-op, and it was squeeze, but we managed it. There was not much room for anything else, but we made it.

So what is this going to cost you… well, it’s pretty good, with a price in the mid 20 thousands for the Trax. You can read more about it right here.
